Establishment of National Eye Bank of Sri Lanka as a Trust

- major causes of blindness worldwide, with the highest prevalence in Asia, are diseases affecting the Cornea.  Asia Cornea Society (ACS) has been formed by leading corneal specialists in Asian countries, contributing significantly towards developing clinical, educational and research programmes aiming at alleviating Asian and global corneal blindness. National Eye Bank of Sri Lanka is a non-profitable organization with a mission to procure and provide donated human eye tissues for sight restoring transplantation procedures as well as providing tissues for research and education.  The proposal made by Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health, to convert the existing National Eye Bank of Sri Lanka to a Public Trust by an Act of Parliament and to proceed with matters connected thereto, was approved by the Cabinet.
