Strategic Cities Development Project

- the proposed Project is to be implemented in Galle and Kandy as the initial phase of the project.  The assistance of the World Bank will be received for this urban development programme of the Government, to plan, design and develop selected cities and its surrounding areas to facilitate a guided economic transformation of such cities into one of the major regional economic centres for growth and employment generation.  The project is to be commenced in 2013 and completed within a period of three (03) years at a cost of US $200 million.  Some of the salient features of the project are as follows:

*    improved urban infrastructure and services at the city centre and peripheral local authority areas of Greater Kandy and Galle cities.

*    improved traffic and transport arrangements in both cities.

*    improved urban road network to ease the traffic flow in both cities.

*    benefits to the urban community by improving drainage facilities and solid waste management systems.

Cabinet granted approval to proceed with the project submitted by H.E. the President,  in his capacity as the Minister of Defence and Urban Development.
