- the objective of establishing University Colleges is to expand the intake capacity for the Diploma level programmes of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and produce middle level technicians to meet the industry demands of the country. The proposed University Colleges are scheduled to be commenced from January 2014. One such University College is intended to be setup in Matara in a land located at Maddewatta, Matara which belongs to the Food Department under the Ministry of Co-operatives and Internal Trade. The proposal made by Hon. Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development, to pursue action on this matter, was approved by the Cabinet.
