- there are 17 Universities, inclusive of 02 Buddhist Universities, functioning in the country and the student population at these Universities is about 92,000.  Considering the need to provide hostel facilities to a large number of students of these Universities, it has been proposed to construct 60 buildings in conformity with the modern technology, covering the 17 Universities in two stages to be completed within 02 years.  Each of these buildings will consist of 04 stories with 100 rooms so as to provide hostel facilities to 200 students, acceding 12,000 students will be benefited on completion of this Project.  The proposal made by Hon. S.B. Dissanayake, Minister of Higher Education, to proceed with the Project, was approved by the Cabinet.
