Project to Formulate a Chemical Accidents Prevention and Preparedness Programme for Sri Lanka

 

according to an industrial census conducted, there are nearly 1000 large, medium and small scale chemical industries in the country. It has been found that preparedness measures have to be formulated to prevent or mitigate accidents caused by these chemical industries and activities. The Secretariat for the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) under United Nations Environmental Programme has offered to provide a sum of US $224,834.00 as a grant to Sri Lanka, for such a programme to be implemented. The proposal made by Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, to proceed with the project, was approved by the Cabinet.
