Commemoration of the National Safety Day - 2011
- 26th of December each year has been declared as the National Safety Day. The objective of this declaration is to create awareness among the people on natural and other disasters and particularly to enhance proper disaster response capacity to encounter situations such as the Tsunami which occurred on 26th December 2004. The National Safety Day has been held annually since 2006 and it has been decided to commemorate this event in 2011 in Kattankudy Town, Batticaloa. The proposal made by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Disaster Management to implement a series of programmes for the purpose with the active participation of the relevant Government institutions, was approved by the Cabinet.
