Urban Development Activities in Colombo and Adjoining areas - Housing Development Programmes for Underserved Settlements

- the Government has decided to launch housing development programmes for Underserved Settlements in Colombo and adjoining areas. The proposal made by H.E. the President, in his capacity as a Minister of Defence to implement the following Housing Programmes, was approved by the Cabinet:

* construction of 384 housing units at locations identified by the Urban Development Authority at a total cost of Rs.960 million;
* construction of 1000 housing units at locations identified by the Urban Development Authority at a total cost of Rs.2500 million; and
* construction of 550 housing units at locations identified by the Urban Development Authority at a total cost of Rs.1375 million.

Up to now five low income housing projects have been approved for implementation by the Government. 14,398 housing units are to be constructed under these projects.
