Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2011-06-01
Establishment of the "Engineering Council" to regulate the Professional Practice of Engineering in Sri Lanka by registering Engineering Practitioners
- there is a need for registering the Professional Practice of Engineering in Sri Lanka, similar to those in the existing medical and legal professions. The objective of registration is to identify specifically those who are authorized to practice at different levels under the different categories such as Chartered Engineers, Associate Engineers, Incorporated Engineers, Engineering Diplomates and Engineering Technicians. On a proposal made by Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Power and Energy, Cabinet approval was granted for the establishment of the Engineering Council by an Act of Parliament and to direct the Legal Draftsman to prepare legislation for same. Some members of the Council will be selected from the Universities as well.
