Implementation of Greater Kurunegala Water Supply and Sewerage Project

- out of a total population of 1.45 million in the Kurunegala District, about 150,000 are concentrated in the Kurunegala Town and its immediate suburbs. During the past two decades commercial and industrial activities in the area have increased rapidly. As such, there is an urgent need to provide safe drinking water for the people in the area and also to provide proper waste water disposal facilities and the above project has been designed to address this issue. Accordingly, based on the recommendation made by the Cabinet Appointed Negotiating Committee (CANC) assisted by the Procurement Committee (PC), Cabinet granted approval to the proposal made by the Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, to sign the contract with M/s. China Machinery and Equipment Import & Export Corporation (CMEC) for a total sum of US $ 77,304,242.00 and domestic funds amounting to Rs.3,198,600,000.00 to be provided by the General Treasury.
