Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United Nations and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Concerning Contributions to the United Nations Stand-By Arrangement System (UNSAS) for Enhancing Participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations
- Sri Lanka has been an active troop and police contributing country to the UN Peacekeeping Operations. At the end of December 2010, Sri Lanka had a total of 1215 Service Personnel deployed in seven Peacekeeping Missions. With the conflict situation in the country being over, the Armed Services and the Police are now in a position to enhance their contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Forces and accordingly, on a proposal made by Hon. (Prof.) G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, Cabinet approval was granted to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations for same, which will provide the following:
* raise the image of the country as a dependable partner in promoting international peace and security.
* provide international exposure and training for our Armed Forces and the Police personnel by working with foreign troops.
* bring monetary benefits to the personnel involved.
* gain priority over other Member States in being selected for deployments.
