Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2024-04-08 (Subject to Confirmation at the next Meeting)
Introduction of Indicative Price for selected Essential Food Commodities
- It has been identified that even though the Sri Lankan Rupee is becoming appreciated against the US Dollar and some other foreign currencies, no reduction is observed in the retail price of the imported essential food commodities in the market. Also, there is a significant difference between the landed price and the retail price of the essential imported food commodities. Under this situation, the Consumer Affairs Authority has taken steps to implement a programme to study the estimated market prices of selected essential food commodities and publish those prices as Indicative Prices weekly, on the guidance of the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security. Through this, the consumers will be able to buy the said food items by being vigilant of the market prices of those essential food commodities. The information submitted by the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security regarding the Indicative Prices of so selected 09 essential food commodities, was considered by the Cabinet.
