Recruitment of 2,500 English Medium Teachers under the Programme on "English for All"

- It has been identified at an assessment conducted with regard to 765 schools the fact that although the existing approved cadre of teachers to teach GCE Ordinary Level subjects in English medium is 4,441, there is a requirement of 6,500 teachers for the purpose and many schools have expanded English medium teaching by making necessary arrangements in addition to the number of teachers currently employed. Accordingly, the joint proposal made by the Hon. President and the Minister of Education to increase the number of 765 schools where subjects are taught in English medium, up to 1,000 in the year 2024 and to increase the approved cadre of English medium subject teachers up to 6500 and recruit 2500 English medium teachers to fulfill the teacher requirement, was approved by the Cabinet.
