Meeting National Obligations to Montreal Protocol in Consistent with the Kigali Amendment on Phase-Down of Hydrofluorocarbon
- Sri Lanka has ratified the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol on phasing-down of hydrofluorocarbon in 2018. Accordingly, Sri lanka is legally bound to phase down import-export trade and consumption of hydrofluorocarbon from 2024‑01‑01. Cabinet approved the proposal made by the the Hon. President, in his capacity as the Minister of Environment to phase down the import hydrofluorocarbon virgin chemicals and all mixtures containing such chemicals to Sri Lanka and consumption of such chemicals in consistent with the national obligations of the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol, while adhering to the said legal bond and to implement hydrofluorocarbon import trade through an annual quota system without causing adverse impacts to the sectors that use hydrofluorocarbon such as agriculture, fisheries, health, tourism, transport, industries, housing and construction.
