Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2023-12-18 (Subject to Confirmation at the next Meeting)

Allowing the Private Sector to import 50,000 MT of GR 11 variety of Rice, similar to Keeri Samba Rice

- Approval of the Cabinet has been granted at the meeting held on 2023‑11‑20 to import 50,000 Metric Tons of rice as per the recommendation of the Food Policy Committee in order to control the price of rice in the market. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security to import 50,000 Metric Tons of GR 11 rice equivalent to Keeri Samba rice by the private sector, in order to provide advantage of the price to the consumers by creating a competition in the price of Keeri Samba rice and Samba rice in the local market, was approved by the Cabinet.
