Establishment of a University on Education by upgrading the National Colleges of Education to the status of Campuses of Universities

- In terms of the Cabinet decision dated 2019‑12‑04, a Committee of Experts has been appointed under the chairmanship of Senior Professor Gunapala Nanayakkara for the purpose of submitting recommendations on administrative and legal procedures to be followed in upgrading the existing National Colleges of Education to the status of the campuses of the universities, with the aim of establishing all graduate teacher cadre in Lanka. As per the recommendations of the said Committee, the proposal made by the Minister of Education to instruct the Legal Draftsman to take necessary action to draft a new Bill for imposing legal provisions to upgrade 19 out of the 20 existing National Colleges of Education to the status of campuses and to establish a new university called Sri Lanka University of Education, was approved by the Cabinet.
