Entering into a Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the Korea's Saemaul Undong Projects in Sri Lanka
- The Saemaul Undong Programme which was implemented since 1970 by the Republic of Korea has been instrumental to transform the traditional agrarian economy prevailed in the rural areas of Korea into an industrialized and export‑oriented economy by improving infrastructure facilities, livelihood, welfare and education. In 2015, the Saemaul programme has also been started in Sri Lanka by the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council after entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Saemaul Foundation, which was established in the year 2013 by the Republic of Korea with a view to expanding the Saemaul concept to the other countries as well. The duration of the said MoU has expired by now. It has been proposed to sign a new Memorandum of Understanding enabling to implement projects under the Saemaul Undong concept covering all the provinces of Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Hon. Prime Minister in his capacity as the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government to sign a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding among the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government; the Department of External Resources and the Saemaul Foundation, was approved by the Cabinet.
