Submission of the Order in terms of section 2 of the Extradition Law No.8 of 1977 for the approval of the Parliament

- Extradition Law No.8 of 1977 has been enacted to make provision for the extradition of fugitive persons to and from Commonwealth countries and foreign states, to regulate the treatment of persons accused or convicted of offenses committed in Sri Lanka who are extradited from Commonwealth countries and foreign states, and to provide for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The Minister of Defence has the authority to promulgate through an Order published in the Gazette on Commonwealth countries to which the provisions of the section 2 of the said Act apply. Accordingly, an amended Order including 56 countries, in terms of the section 2 of Extradition Law No.8 of 1977, was published through Gazette Extraordinary No.2319/30 dated 2023‑02‑14. The proposal made by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Defense to submit the said Order for the approval of the Parliament, was approved by the Cabinet.
