Control of single-use plastic/ polythene waste

- Proposals regarding the import, production, sale and domestic use of 07 single-use plastic/polythene products were discussed in the Cabinet meeting held on 30-08-2021 and accordingly, it was decided to appoint an Expert Committee to examine the said proposals and submit a report with recommendations. The proposal submitted by the Minister of Environment to ban the import, production, sale and domestic use of the following plastic products with effect from 01-06-2023 as recommended by the report presented by the said Expert Committee, was approved by the Cabinet.

• Single-use plastic drinking straws and stirrers
• Single-use plates, cups (except yogurt cups), spoons, forks and knives, including yogurt spoons made of plastic
• Plastic garlands
• Plastic string hopper trays.
