Imposing Regulations under Section 47(1) of the Antiquities Ordinance No.9 of 1940

- The Department of Archaeology and other State Institutions have the capacity to take legal action against an individual violating the Antiquities Ordinance by unlawfully damaging a site or property of archaeological importance. Accordingly, the aforesaid State Institutions contribute the protection of the archaeological places in Sri Lanka and conservation of the same on behalf of the future generation. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs to take necessary action to impose appropriate regulations as per the provisions of the Antiquities Ordinance No.9 of 1940, enabling to grant an allowance from the Antiquities Gift Fund with a view to further motivating the staff members of the said institutions, was approved by the Cabinet.
