Agreement for the Transfer of Sentenced Prisoners between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Mauritius

- As per the provisions of the Transfer of Offenders Act, No.5 of 1995, a citizen of another country who has been convicted and imprisoned by a Court in Sri Lanka is able to serve his/her sentence in the country of which he/she claims to be a citizen. Likewise the said Act provides provisions for a Sri Lankan citizen who is imprisoned in a specified country to be transferred back to Sri Lanka to serve his / her balance period of imprisonment. Entering into an Agreement between Sri Lanka and the other relevant country is essential for the above purpose. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms to enter into an Agreement for the transfer of sentenced prisoners between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Mauritius, was approved by the Cabinet.
