Establishment of Weli Oya Sugar Factory attached to Lanka Sugar Company (Pvt.) Ltd.

- Annual requirement of Sugar in the Country is around 600,000 MT. Approximately 85% out of the same is imported spending about Rs. 45 billion annually. Local sugar production in the year 2020 was 54,000 MT and necessary arrangements have been made to increase that quantity further. Accordingly, it has been proposed to establish a new sugar factory based in Weli Oya at Monaragala district under Lanka Sugar Company (Pvt.) Ltd. As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Plantation to implement the proposed project, was approved by the Cabinet.
