Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2021-11-23
Revision of laws relating to journalists and media institutions and formulation of policies and ethics
- Taking into consideration the global growth in the mass media and communication sectors and paying special attention to the existing laws for media standardization in Sri Lanka, international laws and the performance of national and international media institutions and socio‑cultural identity, focus has been paid towards presentation of a Sri Lankan Mass Media Policy, setting up the background for moulding media professionals with esteemed professionalism parallel to that, socialization of knowledge, comprehension and communication strategies on the use and behaviour of new media including social media and facilitating the adaption to digital technology. For this, the necessity of amending the prevailing laws and preparation of the policies and ethics pertaining to journalists and media institutions to suit the present needs, has been identified. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Mass Media to appoint a Committee with the representation of intellects in the Public and Private sectors and in the fields such as media, marketing, education, law, administration and economics, to submit recommendations to the Cabinet for the said purposes, was approved by the Cabinet.
