Banning Cattle Slaughter in Sri Lanka
- The Cabinet at its meeting held on 2020‑09‑28 has granted approval to ban cattle slaughter for enhancing local agriculture and local milk production and to amend the laws and regulations related thereto and the by-laws passed by Local Authorities pertaining to the cattle slaughtering. Accordingly, Legal Draftsman has prepared Bills to amend the following Acts/ Ordinances.

• the Butchers Ordinance No. 9 of 1893 (Chapter 272)

• the Animals Act No. 29 of 1958

• the Municipal Councils Ordinance (Chapter 252)

• the Urban Councils Ordinance (Chapter 255)

• the Pradeshiya Sabhas Act No. 15 of 1987

The Attorney General has confirmed that the above Bills are not inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution. Accordingly, the joint proposal made by the Prime Minister; the Minister of Public Service, Provincial Council and Local Government and the Minister of Agriculture to publish the said Bills in the Government Gazette and submit the same thereafter in Parliament, was approved by the Cabinet.
