Declaration of the Policy Objective of Renewable Energy Development

- In accordance with the National Policy Framework, “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour”, it has been focused on getting the maximum of the electricity demand in the country through the renewable energy sources by 2030 and accordingly, the Government has taken a policy decision to pursue necessary action to meet 70% of the total electricity demand of the country from the renewable energy by 2030 and to reach Carbon Neutrality in electricity generation by the year 2050. The Ceylon Electricity Board should prepare 'Least Cost, Long Term Generation Plan' within the said policy framework as per the Electricity Act No. 20 of 2009 and Amendments related thereto. The Minister of Power should submit General Policy Guidelines to the Ceylon Electricity Board to prepare the said Generation Plan in terms of the provisions of section (5) of the said Act. As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Power to issue the relevant guidelines, was approved by the Cabinet.
