Granting approval for Water Villas and Water Bungalows

- With a view to attracting high‑end travellers in the global tourism industry, some countries engaged in the tourism industry have introduced the concept of “Water Villas”. It has appeared that the concept of Water Villas and Water Bungalows can be used for promoting tourism industry in Kalpitiya and other maritime areas. 12 islands in Kalpitiya have already been vested with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) to develop tourism industry in the said areas by promoting the concept of “Island Resorts”. As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Tourism to implement the project for the construction of a luxury tourist resort comprising 50 Water Villas and Water Bungalows by M/s Sun Resort Investment Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, which has acquired Vellai I, Vellai II and Vellai III islands in Kalpitiya on long term lease basis, was approved by the Cabinet.
