Declaration of the “National Energy Day”

- A national programme including various activities to enhance the knowledge, attitudes and creativity of school children on sustainable energy has been planned by the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Education together with the State Ministry of Solar Power,Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development. Simultaneously, it has been proposed to declare 26th of June as the “National Energy Day” annually, taking into account the 26th of June, 1882, the date on whichSri Lankans first saw the light emanating from an electric lamp at the time that the German vessel SS Helios arrived at the Colombo Harbour. Accordingly, the joint proposal made by the Minister of Power and the Minister of Energy to declare 26th of June at each year as the “National Energy Day” and to implement the proposed programme to make school children aware from 26th June to 26th Junein the following year and to culminate in an award ceremony, was approved by the Cabinet.
