Establishment of Small Claims Courts

- Since the delay in functioning of law has reached a breaking point in Sri Lanka, a complete and widespread reform with planned and a focused approach is found to be required to focus on the issues causing delay of law and to revitalize and strengthen the process of the administration of justice. Accordingly, the Minister of Justice has appointed a committee under the chairmanship of Hon. Justice Dr. Ruwan Fernando, Judge of the Court of Appeal for studying in regard to the establishment of Pre-trial and Small Claims Court. Considering the recommendations submitted by the said Committee, the Cabinet approved the proposals made by the Minister of Justice to pursue action as follows.

* Amendment to the Judicature Act No. 2 of 1978 securing provisions required to Small Claims Courts.

* Formulation of a draft bill enabling to introduce of new laws to make provisions for special procedure of Small Claims Courts.
