Upgrading selected District General Hospitals administered by Provincial Councils under the administration of the Ministry of Health

- The Government has planned to upgrade one selected hospital in each district providing facilities such as medical treatment, surgical theatres and laboratories similar to that of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka at present. Accordingly, the district general hospitals Matale, Nawalapitiya, Embilipitiya, Awissawelle, Gampaha, Mannar, Vavuniya, Killinochchi and Mullaitivu administered by Provincial Councils at present and coming under the category of tertiary care hospitals have been identified to be taken under the purview of the Ministry of Health for enhancing their quality, equality, and efficiency of service delivery as well as for the smooth administration thereof. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Health for taking over those district general hospitals under the purview of the Ministry of Health in order to accomplish those objectives, was approved by the Cabinet.
