Establishment of the functions of the Department of Manpower and Employment on legal basis

- In terms of a Cabinet decision, the Department of Manpower and Employment was established in the year 2010 by an Extraordinary Gazette Notification. The said Department is vested with preparation and implementation of a National Policy on Manpower and Employment, creation and promotion of employment, career guidance related activities, collection, analysis and distribution of labour market details and the services rendered by the Job Portal. Through this, it is expected to achieve the objectives of reducing the rate of unemployment and underemployment in the country and, shaping and managing the manpower in line with the future trends. The necessity of legitimacy of this Department in discharging the said functions has been recognized and the appropriateness of establishing the same through a Parliamentary Act has been observed. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Youth & Sports to establish the functions of the Department of Manpower and Employment on legal basis and to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft a Bill incorporating the provisions for the purpose, was approved by the Cabinet.
