Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with Liechtenstein
- Liechtenstein, a small land locked country situated between Switzerland and Austria is a country with Parliamentary Democracy and a Constitutional Monarch as its Head of State. It is a highly industrialized country which manufactures mainly pharmaceuticals, precision instruments and electronics and is considered as one of the world's richest countries. Last year, its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was US$ 5.8 billion and the per capita income was around US$ 143,700. Liechtenstein, being a member of the United Nations' Organization, is also a member state of the European Economic Area with low income tax regime that has attracted investments through developed banking system, and maintains diplomatic relations with many countries including India and Pakistan. With a view to improving the friendship and cooperation between the two countries at the bilateral and multilateral levels, the Government of Liechtenstein has expressed its interest to establish diplomatic relations with the Government of Sri Lanka. It will enable Sri Lanka to attract investments and high spending tourists by establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Foreign Minister, to establish diplomatic relations with Liechtenstein, was approved by the Cabinet.
