Entering into an Agreement for a research project to eliminate toxic chemicals in drinking water
- It has been proposed to enter into an Agreement between the University of Peradeniya and the University of Sri Jayawardenapura in collaboration with the Robert Gordon University, United Kingdom, pertaining to the research project funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Through the proposed project, it is expected to invent an inexpensive and hygienic biological solution that can be produced using natural organisms to eliminate the highly toxic Cyanotoxin released from the Blue-Green Algae that has grown due to contamination of drinking water sources which is considered to be the cause for spreading of kidney disease in Sri Lanka. It is proposed to provide Sterling Pounds 0.3 million by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council for the said project. As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Education, to enter into the relevant Agreement between the University of Peradeniya and the University of Sri Jayawardenapura in collaboration with the Robert Gordon University, United Kingdom, for the implementation of the said project, was approved by the Cabinet.
