Appointing a Steering Committee for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
- At the the General Assembly session of the United Nations held in September 2015, 193 countries including Sri Lanka endorsed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The World Sustainable Development Report 2020 has shown that several challenges are there to achieve the majority of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals introduced by the said agenda. In order to examine the said situation, the Foreign Minister with the concurrence of the Hon. Prime Minister has appointed a Working Group and the said Group has pointed out the need to have a high - level political leadership to steer the process of achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Accordingly, the joint proposal made by the Hon. Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to appoint a Steering Committee comprising of the relevant Ministers/ State Ministers and the Secretaries to the relevant Ministries, under the chairmanship of the Hon. Prime Minister to steer and guide the process of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, was approved by the Cabinet.
