Construction of the International Gem and Jewellery Trade Centre

- It has been planned to construct the International Gem and Jewellery Trade Centre at Demuwawatha, Ratnapura by investing the funds of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority to enable to provide all the services and facilities under one roof, such as independent quality testing services, laboratory services and banking services, export services and required services for the sellers and buyers as in Bangkok and Hong Kong, the leading sales centres for Gem and Jewellery in Asia. Accordingly, it has been planned to construct a 05 storey building with a floor area of 17,550 square feet at a cost of Rs. 365 Million, in a land in extent of 22 perches in Demuwawatha, Ratnapura as the first phase of the project and to acquire the adjacent plot of land to the aforementioned plot of land and build a modern building with 14 stories as the second phase.

As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Industries to award the contract for the design and construction of the proposed building as the first phase of the project as a direct contract to the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, was approved by the Cabinet.
