Amendment to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment Act, No.22 of 1994
- Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment is explicitly prohibited by Article 11 of the Constitution. Such people should be condemned and punished in the strongest possible manner. Therefore, it has been identified that fines in the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment Act, No.22 of 1994 should be revised to suite to the present day requirement. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Justice to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft a bill for the purpose of amending the said Act, was approved by the Cabinet.
