Amendments to the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution to be moved at the Committee Stage in Parliament

-The Cabinet, at its meeting held on 2020‑09‑ 02 has granted approval to publish the draft Bill on the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution in the Government Gazette and to submit the same thereafter in Parliament for approval. Accordingly, taking into consideration the determination of the Supreme Court on the said draft Bill, the amendments to be moved at the Committee Stage of the said Bill in Parliament were submitted to the Cabinet by the Minister of Justice and the Cabinet granted approval for the same proposals.

Further, it was decided at this Cabinet meeting that the provisions relating to following matters too should be moved at the Committee Stage of the Bill of the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution.

• Provisions to increase of number of the Supreme Court Judges and the Court of Appeal Judges , taking into account the large number of cases pending in such courts.

• Provisions to submit only the Bills relating to matters arising in connection with the national security and disaster situations in Parliament, treating those as Urgent Bills.

• Provisions for authorizing the Auditor General to audit the accounts of a Public Corporation or a Company in which the Government or a Public Corporation holds 50% or more of the shares.

• Incorporate provisions relating to the number of Ministers of the Cabinet of Ministers, Ministers who are not members of the Cabinet of Ministers and Deputy Ministers as provided in the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution in the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution without change.
