Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2020-10-12
Taking actions regarding the railway employees who reside in the railway reserved lands belonging to the Department of Sri Lanka Railways

-The Department of Sri Lanka Railways has about 14,000 acres of reserved lands and about 10% of them have been given on lease to various parties. Further, various persons are in unauthorized possession of about 80% of the remaining lands and officers presently serving in the Department as well as the officers who retired from the departmental service are from among them. These lands are being used for unauthorized purposes such as construction of houses and business premises and cultivation. Some railway employees who have illegally acquired those lands have been evicted from those places by legal proceedings. There have also been instances of disciplinary action been taken against them having to forego their right to pension. Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal made by the Minister of Transport to appoint a Ministerial Committee consisting of the following to study the matters with regard to the said issue and submit recommendations to the Cabinet.
