International Scientific Cooperation for Food Safety and Security in Sri Lanka under the Sustainable Rice Production

The Paddy Research Development Institute of the Department of Agriculture is responsible for paddy research in Sri Lanka and breeding of all rice varieties cultivated in Sri Lanka is done in the research stations of the institute. In this process, the International Rice Research Institute in Philippine extends its cooperation by providing the necessary instructions, guidance, genetic resources and technology. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development to implement a programme to work in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute to produce rice varieties resistant to climatic changes, diseases and pests expected presently as well as in time to come, was approved by the Cabinet.
