National Programme for the Eradication of Poverty

- The eradication of poverty in the country has been identified as one of the top priorities of the Government in order to create an inclusive and suitable development under the National Policy Framework of the Government - “Saubagyaye Dakma”. Further, the Development Goals identified in the said National Policy Framework of the Government are consistent with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E. the President to implement the following proposals on priority basis with a view to eradicating the poverty in the country, was approved by the Cabinet.

* Implementing a programme ensuring the food security of low income families by providing them with essential food items;

* The programme for providing 100,000 jobs for 100,000 poor families;

* Implementing the programme for providing the poor families with houses under the programme of “One House - One Village” on an accelerated basis;

* Implementing the rural road development programme of 100,000 km to provide quality road access facilities for at least 1,000,000 households; and

* Providing easy access to credit prioritizing the small business development, self-employment and household needs and household level livelihood development initiatives.
