Implementation of the Kandy Tunnel Construction Project with funding from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of Korea

- It has been identified that it is appropriate to construct a By-Pass Tunnel as a solution to the vehicle congestion in the Kandy urban area. Although, it has been planned to implement the project for the construction of the by-pass tunnel in Kandy with funding from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of Korea, the activities pertaining to the project have since been delayed. The total estimated cost of the project is US$ 252.30 million and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of Korea has agreed to provide financial facilities amounting to US$ 199.27 million. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Roads and Highways to commence the procurement activities pertaining to the project for the construction of the said by-pass tunnel, was approved by the Cabinet.
