Implementation of an Interconnected Modernized Road Network in Sri Lanka
- In terms of the National Policy Framework named the 'Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour', the modernization of the Road Network has been identified as a key factor necessary to achieve a high level of economic growth. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Roads and Highways, to implement the priority projects such as the construction of Overtaking Lanes at 3-5 km intervals on the National Highways, minimizing traffic congestion and road traffic crashes in areas identified as bottle necks and re surfacing and modernization of the entire road network in conformity with the international standards, the development of 100,000 km of Alternative Road Network, to facilitate a higher level of access to the main Highways and Expressways and improvement of rural access roads to make access to such an alternative road network, was approved in principle, by the Cabinet.
