Agreement for the transfer of sentenced persons between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Czech Republic

- In terms of the provisions of the Transfer of Offenders Act, No.5 of 1995, a citizen of another country convicted and sentenced to imprisonment by a court in Sri Lanka can serve his/her sentence in the country of which he claims to be a citizen and a citizen of Sri Lanka imprisoned in any other country can serve his/her balance period of imprisonment in Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, in order to make the provisions of the Act to be applicable, it is essential for an Agreement to be entered into between Sri Lanka and the respective country.
Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Justice, Human Rights & Law Reforms to enter into an Agreement on transfer of sentenced persons between the two countries in conformity with the laws of both the countries, was approved by the Cabinet.
