Upgrading of the National Colleges of Education to the status of the University Faculties for the conversion of the entire teacher cardre in Sri Lanka as Graduates

- A programme to convert the entire teacher community of Sri Lanka into graduates, for enhancing the professionalism of the teachers, has been planned to be implemented under the theme: 'An Informed Citizen' and 'A Society Endowed with Knowledge' as depicted in the Policy Statement 'Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour' presented by H.E. the President. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Education to convert the National Colleges of Education to the status of the University Faculties and provide opportunities for the teachers to obtain their degrees was approved by the Cabinet in principle and the Cabinet also granted approval to appoint an Experts' Committee representing the fields of Education and Higher Education, to fulfill the requisite Academic and Legal functions with regard to the implementation of this programme.
