Convention on the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Chemical Safety and Security Management for Member States of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the Asian Region
- The International Convention on the prohibition of production, development, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and on their destruction is primarily an arms control treaty which is an indirect way of achieving contribution to minimize the chemical disasters and acts of chemical terrorism. Sri Lanka has signed the said convention in 1993. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Defence to hold a Convention on the Chemical Weapons Convention and Chemical Safety and Security Management for Member States of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in the Asian Region in Colombo on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of December, 2019 with the participation of 15 representatives from the Asian Member States and 25 local representatives by the National Authority for Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention operated under the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, was approved by the Cabinet.
