Increase of fines (Bail Act, No.30 of 1997)

- Since the fines imposed in respect of violating the provisions in certain Acts and Ordinances are totally inadequate to prevent such violations, a Committee was appointed by the then Minister of Justice & Prison Reforms to study this situation and where appropriate to make recommendations for the increase of the said fines. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Justice & Prison Reforms to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft legislation for the increase of fines in the Bail Act in accordance with the recommendations of the said Committee report, was approved by the Cabinet.
