Amendment of the Universities Act, No.16 of 1978

- It has been found necessary to amend the Universities Act, No.16 of 1978 for the establishment of the higher educational institutes, maintenance and administration, so as to have a strong legal framework to regulate the private higher educational institutes effectively to cater to the recent developments. As such, the proposal made by the Hon. Prime Minister to amend the said Act in accordance with the recommendations in the Report of the Officials' Committee appointed under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of City Planning, Water Supply and Higher Education on matters focused in the concept paper relating to same by a Board of Experts, was approved by the Cabinet.
